Aksara

The Akṣara adhikaraṇa turns to the famous dialogue between Yājñavalkya and Gārgī, where the “Imperishable” is described as the unseen support in which even ether itself is woven. The sutras establish that this Akṣara is Brahman alone, not merely the syllable Om, the Pradhāna, or the individual self.

The first doubt arises from language itself. The word Akṣara can etymologically mean a syllable, and so one might take it to refer to Om, the sacred sound often used in meditation. Yet the Upaniṣadic description immediately surpasses any symbolic sense: even space, the first subtle principle in creation, is said to be woven into it like warp and woof. Such universal support can belong only to Brahman, the ultimate ground of all manifestation.

The text further strips away every relative quality. The Imperishable is said to be neither gross nor minute, neither short nor long, beyond all measurable predicates. This radical negation points toward the transcendent Absolute, not toward any limited object of meditation or conditioned principle. Akṣara is the unobjectifiable reality in which all distinctions dissolve.

The following sutra strengthens this through the language of rulership. Under the command of this Imperishable, the sun and moon remain in their appointed places. Cosmic order itself is sustained by its silent sovereignty. Such governance cannot belong to the insentient Pradhāna, which lacks consciousness and intentionality.

Finally, the text attributes seeing, hearing, thinking, and knowing to Akṣara, while simultaneously negating all limiting adjuncts. This excludes both inert matter and the embodied individual soul. The individual self, as ordinarily experienced, is conditioned by mind and body, whereas Akṣara is the pure conscious principle beyond all such constraints.

The beauty of Akṣara lies in its paradox: the Imperishable is beyond all predicates, yet it is the hidden law by which cosmos and consciousness are held together. The woven universe, from ether to thought, rests in that silent unchanging reality.
